This course focuses on strategies for supporting young people who are deaf or have hearing loss within the high school setting. With inputs from those with lived experiences we will discuss key aspects of deafness/hearing loss and how these impact learning in the classroom. We will also touch upon the many different journeys students who are d/Deaf or have hearing loss go through to find their self-identity and how you as a teacher can support them in that journey.
Key learnings:
- Understand key aspects of deafness/hearing loss impacting on learning in the classroom
- Explore the importance of self-identify and sense of self for students who are d/Deaf or who have hearing loss as well as the reasons why they may not be doing so
- Understand the potential ups and downs that students who are d/Deaf or who have hearing loss may go through and learn strategies on how to support them
- Understand the difference between overall learning expectations of students who are d/Deaf or who have hearing loss vs expectations of their understanding in regards to accessibility and access to sound/comprehension
Course Details:
- Two hour online interactive course for professionals working with high school students who are d/Deaf or who have hearing loss.
- Multiple opportunities for group discussion of key concepts and case examples.
- Participants will require access a computer/tablet with video and audio capabilities in order to join and interact throughout the course.
- The course will be recorded for registered participants to have access to for a limited time following the event.
Completing “Why won’t my student listen?” – Strategies for supporting young people in high-school” can contribute 2 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Elective PD.
