Join us in an introductory exploration of the fascinating topic of speech acoustics: the basics of the speech signal, why it is important to understand when working with hearing loss. 

This course focuses on the basics of speech acoustics and understanding how functional access to sound impacts on listening and speech skill development. The course explores how we use speech acoustics information to guide clinical intervention for hearing loss, how it relates to hearing aid settings or hearing implant programming, and the benefit of collaborative practices between professionals to optimise outcomes.

Course Details:

  • Two hour online interactive course for professionals working with preschool, primary and high school students with hearing loss.
  • Multiple opportunities for group discussion of key concepts and practical application of strategies to support student learning.
  • Participants will require access a computer/tablet with video and audio capabilities in order to join and interact throughout the course.
  • The course will be recorded for registered participants to have access to for a limited time following the event.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants of this workshop will gain insights into: 
  • The basics of speech acoustics and how it relates to the listening hierarchy. 
  • Relationships between speech acoustics information and a child’s perception and production. 
  • How speech acoustics information informs hearing aid settings and hearing implant programming. 
  • Practical case studies, where strategies for professional collaboration relating to speech acoustics information are discussed to help optimise a child’s access to sound.
