“Why won’t my student listen?” – Strategies for supporting young people with hearing loss in high-school

This course focuses on strategies for supporting young people who are deaf or have hearing loss within the high school setting. With inputs from those with lived experiences we will discuss key aspects of deafness/hearing loss and how these impact learning in the classroom. We will also touch upon the many different journeys students who are d/Deaf or have hearing loss go through to find their self-identity and how you as a teacher can support them in that journey.

Unilateral hearing loss in children: supporting positive progress

Children with unilateral hearing loss experience unique challenges for listening, communicating and learning in their everyday contexts. This course explores the unique characteristics of unilateral hearing loss and the effect they can have on the areas of listening, communication, academic achievement, social communication and participation for children and students with this diagnosis. The impact of a unilateral hearing loss diagnosis on skill development, listening effort and fatigue will also be discussed and explored.
