Understanding Hearing Loss – Tips and Tricks for Supporting a Student with Hearing Loss in the Classroom

This course explores the impact of hearing loss on learning in a preschool or classroom environment and provides practical strategies to best support student learning and engagement.

  • Understand degrees and types of hearing loss
  • Explore the implications of hearing loss on learning and development
  • Identify and address challenges to facilitate learning and optimal progress
  • Understand the use of a Wireless Communication Device
  • Learn practical classroom teaching tips to best support engagement, participation and learning for students with hearing loss.

 

Course details

  • Two hour online interactive course for professionals working with preschool, primary and high school students with hearing loss.
  • Multiple opportunities for group discussion of key concepts and practical application of strategies to support student learning.
  • Participants will require access a computer/tablet with video and audio capabilities in order to join and interact throughout the course .

 

Overview

Interactive & online: Participants attend using a videoconferencing platform. A unique link to access the course will be provided to participants at the time of registration.

Course facilitator

Dr Pia Watkins, PhD

Dr Pia Watkins, PhD is a Senior Research Audiologist and Regional Manager of the Southern Part of NSW and ACT. She has a background as a Paediatric Speech Pathologist in Denmark, before completing her Master of Audiology and PhD of Audiology at Macquarie University under a HEARing CRC Scholarship. Pia is passionate about hearing and listening difficulties in children of all ages. She enjoys combining clinical knowledge with the latest research in order to create new and innovative ways to support each child to reach their full potential.

 

Accreditation

Completing ”Understanding Hearing Loss: Tips and Tricks for Supporting a Student with Hearing Loss in the Classroom” can contribute 2 hours of TQI Accredited PL addressing Standard Descriptors 1.1.2, 1.2.2, 1.6.2, 2.6.2, 3.3.2, 3.5.2, 4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.4.2, 4.5.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2.
