Building Consistent Hearing Aid Use in Young Children

Young children with hearing loss are too young to understand the importance and impact of wearing hearing aids consistently therefore they rely on their parents/caregivers to encourage optimal hearing aid use from as early on as possible. At certain stages, the responsibility of supporting consistent hearing aid use can be a daunting task for parents due to a range of factors/challenges.
This two hour online interactive course presents recent research into the importance of optimal hearing aid use to a child's communication and language outcomes.
- To be able to link the importance of optimal hearing aid use to a child’s communication and learning outcomes.
- To develop a greater understanding regarding what optimal hearing aid use looks like.
- To develop a deeper insight into the malleable and fixed factors that may influence hearing aid use.
- To develop strategies for supporting parents and early educators.
- Two hour interactive workshop suited for professionals working with young children with hearing loss.
- Multiple opportunities for group discussion of key concepts, case examples and application of techniques.

Lisa Nailand, BA Speech and Hearing Therapy (Hons), CPSP, LSLS Cert. AVT ®
Lisa joined TSC in 2008. She is a senior listening and spoken language specialist and a practicing speech pathologist. She graduated with an honors degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa in 1992 and she is currently completing a Masters of Applied Science at the University of Sydney. She is writing a thesis about the factors that impact hearing aid use in young children with early identified hearing loss. Lisa is passionate about family centred practice and the importance of working alongside the child’s family unit in reaching the best possible outcomes for each child with hearing loss. She also enjoys mentoring other therapists at TSC who are working towards their certification.
Dr Pia Watkins, PhD
Dr Pia Watkins, PhD is a Senior Research Audiologist and Regional Manager of the Southern Part of NSW and ACT. She has a background as a Paediatric Speech Pathologist in Denmark, before completing her Master of Audiology and PhD of Audiology at Macquarie University under a HEARing CRC Scholarship. Pia is passionate about hearing and listening difficulties in children of all ages. She enjoys combining clinical knowledge with the latest research in order to create new and innovative ways to support each child to reach their full potential.
